To circumvent Egypt’s Pharaoh Ramses I (Ian Keith) who ordered the execution of all young Hebrew men, float baby Moses (Fraser C. Heston) in the Nile River in a reed basket. Saved by the daughter of Pharaoh Bithiah (Nina Foch), he is adopted and raised in the court of his brother Pharaoh Sethi (Sir Cedric Hardwicke). Moses (Charlton Heston) gets Sethis approval and love from Princess Nefretiri (Anne Baxter), as well as the hatred of Sethis’ son, Ramesses II (Yul Brynner). When his Hebrew inheritance is revealed, Moses is driven out of Egypt and travels across the desert, where he marries, has a son and is commanded by God to return to Egypt to deliver the Hebrews from bondage.
